What is the Canine Adolescence Bitesize Course?

This short course exists because canine adolescence is the most misunderstood stage in a dog’s life, and the consequences of that misunderstanding are serious. Adolescent dogs are the most likely to be surrendered to a shelter, the most likely to be subjected to aversive training, the most at risk of failed adoptions, and the most at risk of behavioural euthanasia. Most of that is preventable. None of it is the dog’s fault.

Learn More About The Bitesize Canine Adolescence Course..

The science is clear, but it doesn’t reach the people who need it. Dog guardians are still being told that their adolescent dog is being stubborn, testing them, or in need of a firmer hand. Many are advised to neuter to “calm them down.” Both of those responses can make things worse, and both miss what’s actually happening inside the dog.

This bitesize introduction gives you the foundations: what adolescence actually is, what’s happening hormonally and neurologically, why fear and reactivity can suddenly appear, and what genuinely helps. It’s the entry point. The Level 4 Diploma in Canine Adolescence goes deeper into all of it — case studies, behaviour modification planning, the neutering evidence base, and the practitioner-facing application — and you’ll find information about that at the end.

Assessments
  • This course assumes no prior knowledge and is suitable for anyone to study.
  • Canine Principles e-Learning platform can be accessed instantly from any device with an internet connection.
  • Courses are written or recorded in English.
  • The minimum age for access to this course is 18 years.
Each of the five lessons ends with a short reflective prompt. These prompts do not require formal grading but are designed for you to write down answers that anchor what you have learned to a real dog you have known or worked with.
The Bitesize Course provides foundational knowledge on what canine adolescence is, what occurs hormonally and neurologically, why fear and reactivity can suddenly appear, and what genuinely helps. Specifically, you will learn to:
  • Understand Development & Behaviour: Define canine adolescence, explain how it differs from puberty , and recognize common adolescent behaviours that are frequently misread as stubbornness, testing, or rebellion.
  • Analyse the Relationship Dynamics: Explain how the quality of the dog–guardian relationship directly influences how adolescence unfolds.
  • Examine Hormonal Shifts: Describe the main hormonal changes that occur in adolescent males and females. You will learn why testosterone acts as a behaviour modulator rather than a direct cause of aggression.
  • Identify Female Cycle Changes: Identify the behavioral signs of the female heat cycle (which often start weeks before physical signs) and define overt and covert phantom pregnancies. You will also learn why hormones are simply an input into behaviour and not the entire picture.
  • Explore Neurological Processes: Explain the four main neurological processes (apoptosis, neurogenesis, synaptic pruning, and myelination) that reshape the brain. You will understand why the emotional limbic system matures before the impulse-controlling prefrontal cortex , the role of dopamine in reward-seeking and risk-taking , and why skills seem "forgotten" due to synaptic pruning.
  • Manage Fear & Reactivity: Describe what fear periods are, when they occur , and how fear extinction memory is impaired during adolescence. You will learn to distinguish a temporary fear period from lasting fear conditioning and understand why aversive training causes disproportionate harm.
  • Implement Practical Management: Discover why environmental management is more important than training during this stage , understand the rationale behind a selective "social sabbatical" , and learn to use a "snakes-and-ladders" metaphor to set realistic expectations for progress.
  • Evaluate the Neutering Evidence Base: Summarize the shifting evidence base for delaying neutering, including its specific impacts on joint health, cancer risk, behaviour, and persistent phantom pregnancies.
Note: For those looking to go deeper, our Level 4 Diploma covers advanced biology, neurological development, neutering frameworks, and five detailed behaviour case studies tracking assessment and training plans.
This material is written in plain language to accommodate a wide audience, assuming no prior background in canine science. It is designed for:
  • Canine Professionals: Trainers, dog walkers, groomers, daycare staff, fosterers, rescue assessors, and veterinary teams who want a grounded, practitioner-ready introduction or a deeper qualification.
  • Dog Guardians: Individuals who want to understand what is going on with their dog so they can navigate this challenging stage at depth rather than just surviving it.
